Nobel Peace Center - Freedom of expression
Concept development, brand identity and communication
Every year, the Nobel Peace Center hosts a conference and festival to honor the Nobel Prize laureates and engage in discussions surrounding their respective causes.
In 2022, journalists Maria Ressa from the Philippines and Dimitry Muratov from Russia were awarded the Nobel Prize for their courageous advocacy for freedom of the press and opinion within their respective countries.
For this occasion, the Nobel Peace Center sought a comprehensive visual identity and communication concept to effectively convey the message to a diverse audience across various platforms, including social media and physical spaces.
The development process was centered around refining messaging and understanding the target audience. In a global context marked by conflict, suppression of dissenting voices, and societal transformations, it was imperative to broaden the concept of freedom of the press to encompass a wider spectrum of issues, including religion and gender orientation.
The visual concept of "concealing and revealing" was adopted to symbolize "freedom of expression." This was represented through the use of orange bars and expansive surfaces to partially obscure both text and images, evoking a sense of frustration at the inability to fully access the message.
The result was a coherent communication strategy, underpinned by a visually impactful identity characterized by its arresting stop effect. Moreover, the flexible visual identity system ensured seamless adaptability across digital and physical touchpoints, thereby effectively engaging audiences in meaningful dialogue.
